Golden Piedmont. From Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia to East Central Alabama
The Reed farm in Cabarrus County was the site of the first authenticated discovery of gold in North Carolina. In 1799, Conrad Reed, a 12-year-old boy found a 17-pound gold nugget, sparking neighbors' interest in searching for gold in their own lands.

In 1830 the first authenticated gold discovery in Alabama was made by William Wyatt Bibb and his father-in-law Todd Robinson, in Chilton County, near where de Soto and his men may have passed in the 1540s.
