Golden Piedmont. From Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia to East Central Alabama

​The Reed farm in Cabarrus County was the site of the first authenticated discovery of gold in North Carolina. In 1799, Conrad Reed, a 12-year-old boy found a 17-pound gold nugget, sparking neighbors' interest in  searching for gold in their own lands.​

In 1830 the first authenticated gold discovery in Alabama  was made by William Wyatt Bibb and his father-in-law Todd Robinson, in Chilton County, near where de Soto and his men may have passed in the 1540s.
